Job Description:

The Analyst will primarily be responsible for carrying out analyses of environmental samples for trace elements using Inductively Coupled Argon Plasma - Mass Spectrometry (ICPMS).

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Prepares samples using procedures described in the test methods. Creates a ‘batch’ in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) before initiating the analysis, when applicable.
  • Performs instrumental and non-instrumental analysis using procedures described in the test methods, without modification, and carries out analysis or operations (only if that procedure or operations is documented).
  • Carries out quality control procedures and recognizes when data is unacceptable using guidelines stated in the test methods or in the department’s standard operating procedures.
  • Prepares reagents, standard stock solutions, etc., and calibration standards as required.
  • Carries out routine maintenance and calibration of instruments and maintains documentation.
  • Interprets data, calculates final results and enters data into the LIMS or into other computerized systems.
  • Assists with training of new employees.
  • Maintains the laboratory areas in a clean and tidy manner.
  • Monitors supply levels required and ensures they are adequate to meet operational goals.
  • Performs other miscellaneous duties as required.

Job Qualifications:

  • Extensive knowledge of ICPMS technique
  • At least 3 years experience as ICPMS analyst preferably in environmental lab setting
  • Experience with multi-element method development
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal 
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel
  • Experience working in high throughput lab environment
