Job Description:

Performs analysis of environmental samples for inorganic and organic analysis in accordance with departmental standard operating procedures and health and safety policies. Responsibilities include:

  • Prepares samples using procedures described in the test methods. Creates a ‘batch’ in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) before initiating the analysis, when applicable.
  • Performs instrumental and non-instrumental analysis using procedures described in the test methods, without modification, and carries out analysis or operations (only if that procedure or operations is documented).
  • Carries out quality control procedures and recognizes when data is unacceptable using guidelines stated in the test methods or in the department’s standard operating procedures.
  • Prepares reagents, standard stock solutions, etc., and calibration standards as required.
  • Carries out routine maintenance and calibration of instruments and maintains documentation.
  • Interprets data, calculates final results and enters data into the LIMS or into other computerized systems.
  • Assists with training of new employees.
  • Contributes to maintaining a clean and tidy laboratory
  • Monitors supply levels to ensure that operational goals can be met.
  • Performs other miscellaneous duties as required.

Job Qualifications and Attributes:

  • B.Sc. (chemistry preferred), or Diploma (chemical sciences preferred) from a recognized technical institute plus 2 years laboratory experience.
  • Theoretical knowledge of the operation of laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
  • Ability to understand and follow procedures.
