Food Safety > Quality Systems

CANTEST has a dedicated Quality Assurance Unit (QAU) that operates independently of operational departments. The QAU’s primary function is to maintain quality control and thereby enhance the quality of work performed in the laboratory.

A detailed listing of the CANTEST’s scope of accreditation can be obtained from the SCC website.

SCC accreditation includes a site inspection once every two years and satisfactory performance in inter-division Proficiency Testing (PT). The Food Safety Division participates in PT programs organized by the following organizations:

  • Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC)
  • Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA)
  • Inter American Accreditation Cooperation (CFIA-IAAC)
  • U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS)
  • Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO)

Test methods routinely used in the laboratory are written as Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). These cover the following:

  • Sample handling and storage requirements
  • Analytical method
  • Quality Control
  • Safety
  • Instrument maintenance and calibration
  • Quality Control acceptance and rejection criteria related to the method

Proficiency Testing Programs:

AOAC - Laboratory Proficiency Testing Program on Pesticide Residues in Fruit and Vegetables

CFIA - Laboratory Proficiency Testing Program on Flunixin, Sulfonamide, DES/Zeranol, Gestagens, beta-Agonists, Endecticides, Tetracyclines, Penta Chloro Phenol (PCP), Organochlorines (OC)

USDA - Sulfonamide in tissues Laboratory Proficiency Testing Program

CFIA/Agriculture Canada - Nitrate/Nitrite Meat Laboratory Proficiency Testing Program

CFIA/Agriculture Canada - Meat Composition and Phosphate Laboratory Proficiency Testing Program

CFIA / Inter American Accreditation Cooperation (IAAC) - Laboratory Proficiency Testing Program on Instant Chocolate.

Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) - Laboratory Proficiency Testing Program on feeds.

Most of the Food Safety Division’s methods are accredited for specific tests as listed in the laboratory's current scope of accreditation from:

  • Standards Council of Canada (SCC), to the most current version of CAN-P-1587, “Guidelines for the Accreditation of Agricultural and Food Products Testing Laboratories.”
  • ISO/IEC 17025 (“General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories”)
